The guides of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made on hand edited (and occasionally translated) early bills of exploration. the 1st sequence, which ran from 1847 to 1899, includes a hundred books containing released or formerly unpublished works through authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and overlaying voyages to the recent global, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. Volumes sixty six and sixty seven of the sequence, edited by way of E. M Thompson and primary released in 1883, include the majority of the diary of Richard Cocks (c.1565-1624), supplemented by means of a range of letters. Cocks was once the top of a buying and selling put up confirmed in Japan via the British East India corporation from its origin in 1613 until eventually 1622, while it went into chapter 11. His diary describes eastern society and tradition within the early 17th century, in addition to the actions of British retailers there.

At the beginning of the new year the king showed a disposition to meddle in the affairs of the English trade and betrayed illhumour in several small matters; and soon there were rumours that both English and Dutch would have to shift to other quarters.
