The correction to "Early" is in fact cancelled in pencil; but I suspect that cancellation was made by Mrs. Yeats at the same time that she added other pencil markings to her son's copy of the Collected Poems. 42 Editing Yeats's Poems that Yeats's spelling is a key to his pronunciation and thus to the sound of his poetry, and since the English spelling of Gaelic names is not fully codified, these suggested changes have not been incorporated in the revised edition of The Poems. 4 Mark, however, adopted all but one of them for Poems (1949).
Yeats met with the publishers in London on 17 March 1939. Among the issues discussed was the possibility of adding a further volume to the project, to include, as she wrote on 13 April, "some autobiographical material in MSS, and also some uncollected essays". On 17 April, Mrs. Yeats at last sent Mark typescripts for New Poems and Last Poems. After commenting on the material, she also noted that there are two small corrections in the Collected Poems, written into his copy of book. Page 197, 6 lines from bottom of page, 'Athene' not 'Athena'.
But the text in question was an anthology reprinting, and to at least some extent Yeats was being deferential to the older poet.
