This gives context to the literature from which I draw in the rest of the book, and will I hope assist in locating the debates in Chapters 3–9 in the context of this discussion. 2 Positioning women’s bodies: Sociological and biomedical approaches In this chapter I provide an overview of the literature on women’s embodiment and women’s work from two perspectives: the sociological and biomedical views of women’s bodies. This overview is not exhaustive, but it offers background and context to the arguments and sources upon which I draw in forthcoming chapters.
Turner acknowledges firstly the role of feminist scholarship with regard to the sociology of the body and, secondly, the continued privileging of male bodies in some texts regarding embodiment and work.
