A first laser beam called “pump” creates a strong wakefield which can be nonlinear but does not lead to wave breaking as in the previous case. In consequence, no electron beam is produced when using this laser pulse alone. A second laser pulse called “the injection pulse” counter propagates to the first laser and injects electrons. When the two pulses collide, the laser beams interfere and generate an electromagnetic beatwave pattern. In this beatwave, the plasma electrons are heated and can gain sufficient kinetic energy to be injected in the wakefield.
