For example, ideas of number and duration may accompany, not only our external sensations, but also our ideas gained from reflection. Other ideas of extension, figure, motion, and rest may accompany the most different sensations. Strictly speaking, Hutcheson's account of the primary qualities cannot be reconciled with his view that all of our ideas are gained from sensation and reflection.

Aaron makes the following statement: As we follow Locke in his account of these operations of the mind, perception, memory, comparison, and so on, the representationalism is not at all apparent.... There is no hesitation in accepting the evidence of reflection on its face value. 21 These remarks may also be applied to Hutcheson. Actually, he might, parallel to Aristotle, make a threefold distinction between calm desires which are guided by reason, passionate desires, which although they follow reason are to some extent turbulent and appetitive in being accompanied by violent sensations, and the appetites or passions which operate without any forethought of good or evil. Aristotle distinguishes movement - the sort of behavior which might include reaction to a sensation - and action whose origin is choice. Choice, in turn, he declares to have its origin in desire and reasoning with a view to an end.
