This is most markedly discerned in discourse developed by Japanese conservative thinkers, for whom capitalist modernizing Asia is a site where Japan’s longstanding nationalist project for extending its cultural reach to a pan-Asian sphere has been reactivated.
While Japanese leaders are even keener to use Japanese popular culture to improve the images of Japan in East Asia, what has become apparent is the urgency to discuss historical issues and memories among populaces of countries concerned. Popular cultural connections could be used as a starting point for promoting this dialogue but would never be an end in themselves for historical reconciliation. Popular cultural encounter will keep on feeding new modes of transnational asymmetry and imagination among people in Japan and other Asian nations.
