Knowles argues that antagonistic research relationships may be just as likely to produce valuable data (Knowles, 2006: 393–95). Establishing an advisory board In both projects discussed here, as a first step, project advisory boards were established, consisting of individuals and organisations with particular expertise. They included representatives from refugee, migrant and community groups; from employers and employers’ organisations; from trade unions; from groups working with refugees and recent migrants; and from fellow academics working in the field.

In all these instances, we need to take a longitudinal perspective, to fully understand how the relationship between migration and employability is played out over the life course. 3 Methodological Challenges in Researching the Working Experiences of Refugees and Recent Migrants Sonia McKay and Paula Snyder This chapter reflects on some of the methodological challenges encountered over a three-year period in the conduct of two research projects on refugees and on recent migrants, exploring issues in relation to objectivity, trust and the ‘hard to reach’.

The primarily method of data collection in both projects was through face-to-face in-depth interviews. However, in the HSE research we also included an element of quantitative data collection, through questionnaires sent out to employers and trade unions and through a secondary analysis of the Labour Force Survey (LFS). We wanted some quantitative data, to provide a contextual frame for the qualitative data. In practice the data obtained through the questionnaires were limited, due to a relatively low 42 McKay and Snyder response rate, while the LFS data, in relation to recent migrants and refugees in employment, were not large enough to provide statistically robust results.
