Thinking back to my youth, it is not easy to see why I became an activist or why I dedicated my life's work to popular movements for progressive and radical change in the United States. The history books I devoured as a kid lionized heroic figures like Daniel Boone and Andrew Jackson, and pitied others, like Osceola, war chief of the Seminoles, and Crazy Horse of the Sioux.
