But Mr. Frank looked very young and healthy, and of course the Germans didn’t know how old everybody was who they wanted to gas, but selected them on the basis of their appearance. Someone who looked healthy had to work, but another who might even be younger, but who was sick or looked bad, went directly to the gas chamber. I always think, if Anne had known that her father was still alive, she might have had more strength to survive, because she died very shortly before the end—only a few days before [liberation].

There was almost nothing to eat, it was winter, and sickness and disease were everywhere. Conditions deteriorated even more with the arrival of several transports, especially those from Auschwitz at the end of October and beginning of November 1944. As the Allied forces approached and the end of the war neared, the Germans no longer knew what to do with the many concentration camp prisoners. Masses of people were jammed into Bergen-Belsen, which had not been designed to accommodate such large numbers.

Because I was getting a religious education and Anne wasn’t we didn’t always have the same days off. On Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings, I had to study Hebrew. Margot also took Hebrew lessons, but Anne didn’t. She followed in her father’s footsteps and wasn’t religious at all. Anne’s parents always came to our house on the Jewish holidays, and at other times, such as New Year’s Eve, we would go to theirs. Then we were allowed to sleep together in her room. At midnight, they would wake us up, and then we would get an oliebolletje (a jelly doughnut) and something to drink.
