Thirty-three years later, Weisgerber31 still believed that any possible advantages of bilingualism were outweighed by what he saw as "the certain detrimental effects", that by nature man was basically monolingual, and that being bilingual was like trying to belong to two different religions at the same time. In an article published in Switzerland in 1928, de Reynold32 expressed the opinion that bilingualism leads to language mixing and language confusion which in turn results in a reduction in the ability to think and act precisely, a decrease in intelligence, an increase in mental lethargy and reduced self-discipline.
