This approach to moral philosophy was shaped by two assumptions: that moral philosophy must be sharply distinguished from anything empirical, and that it had no bearing on any first-order moral issues. Some philosophers were (and are) happy with these assumptions, but others felt that, if moral philosophy were to justify its centrality in a humane education, then it would need to engage more fully with the moral problems of real life. Bioethics had an obvious appeal to moral philosophers looking for a role in the shaping of their culture: it had an obvious first-order relevance, and discussion was conducted in a manner familiar to moral philosophers – in terms of principles.
