Many axons are covered in a myelin sheath, a fatty substance that serves to insulate the axon and to speed the conduction of neural impulses. Axons of one neuron do not directly touch dendrites of surrounding neurons. They are separated by tiny gaps called synapses. When dendrites receive signals of sufficient strength, the membrane gives way to a surge of positively charged sodium ions that rush in and alter the charge of the neuron in such a way that an electrical impulse known as an action potential is created.
