Although Coleridge refutes Hartley's associationist psychology at some length in the Biographia, during the 1790's he still accepted Hartley's mechanistic explanation of the origin of ideas. There was no contradiction in Coleridge's mind between acceptance of the necessitarian philosophy dictated by Hartley's associationism and acceptance of Christian revelation in the Unitarian understanding of it.
