The influence of Hartley is clear enough from Coleridge's lengthy discussion of him in the Biographia Literaria. Although Coleridge refutes Hartley's associationist psychology at some length in the Biographia, during the 1790's he still accepted Hartley's mechanistic explanation of the origin of ideas. There was no contradiction in Coleridge's mind between acceptance of the necessitarian philosophy dictated by Hartley's associationism and acceptance of Christian revelation in the Unitarian understanding of it.

Still must thou repent and be regenerated, and be crucified to the flesh; and this not by thy own mere power; but by a mysterious action of the moral Governor on thee; of the Ordo-ordinians, [sic] the Logos, or Word. Still will the eternal filiation, or Sonship of the Word from the Father; still will the Trinity of the Deity, the redemption, and the thereto necessary assumption of humanity by the Word, 'Who is with God, and is God,' remain truths . . "23 For more than a decade Coleridge had been a Unitarian.

Coleridge's notion of symbol, too, and of "consubstantiality," as an attempt to confront the dynamic problem of the One and the Many, will be seen to be of crucial importance for his idea of faith, Redemption, and the Sacraments. In these instancesas in so many otherswe will find that, although the problem is not resolved and a final synthesis constructed, usually a balance is achieved. And this is probably how it should be, after all, when one is dealing with what he admits to be, as Coleridge does, ultimately mystery.
