I held parent-teacher meetings (as I had in Fisher River) with the parents of the day-school students. indd 35 35 13-08-09 1:04 PM day-to-day communication. In fact, children often entered school knowing only Cree. This presented a challenge, and at this point we did not entertain the idea of teaching in the Cree language. It probably would not have been acceptable to Indian Affairs, as the “English only” policy was in force. Still, we did not punish children or even discourage them from speaking their language, nor was this enforced as part of the residential school.
I am not one for knitting, but I decided to join some of the others who spent time knitting, crocheting, or doing embroidery work.
