Erasistratus himself agreed that some diseases are brought about by such a fluid, but he continually hesitates to blame the cause on bad humours. He denied that thick and viscous humours were the reasons for paralysis by using the following argument: ‘Therefore disease occurs when there is an influx of fluid into the vessels that are situated in the muscles of the lungs, by means of which the reflex movements are performed’. And a little further on he states: ‘The influx is of food, by which the muscles are nourished; this influx is viscous, ductile and difficult to excrete’.
