A Historical Perspective 31 After the establishment of borders in 1919, territorial grievances cropped up between Bulgaria and Greece, Romania, and (mainly) Serbia. Bulgarian border bands (komitadjis) resorted to massacres, kidnappings, and assassinations, especially on the Macedonian frontier. Stambuliski’s policy of Balkan cooperation and friendship led to the suppression of the komitadjis and the voluntary exchange of populations. In 1922 large numbers of Bulgarians had to be dispossessed from Macedonia and Thrace to make room for thousands of Greek refugees from Asia Minor.

The cooperative also provided free meals to its poor members and maintained schools and hospitals. Its dyed yarns became famous in European markets, competing effectively with similar British products. However, after the introduction of steam engines, Britain’s cotton thread became cheaper than that of Ambelakia, which was spun by manual labor. Shipping industries also operated along cooperative lines, at that time, with seamen, captains, lumber merchants, and carpenters pooling their resources and sharing the profits.
