Mrs X, aged 29, has a child with a harelip. For the first three months of his life she did not dare go out, in case the people from her neighbourhood noticed his handicap. The only time she went out was to take the rubbish down; her husband did the shopping on a Sunday. She described how she spent her days staring at her son’s harelip and admitted that she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. 17 Her husband advised her to force herself to go out, but she did not think she was brave enough. Her dream was to buy a house ‘so that they could get out of their unlucky council flat as quickly as possible’.

As for her husband, who is preoccupied with his own world, she knows that it would be useless to confide in him. Such an atmosphere is ripe terrain for the cultivation of the darkest of thoughts concerning marriage, husbands, even relationships. Some young women actually contemplate killing themselves and their child. I think I’m going mad from always being alone with my child! It would appear that those who practise tenuki, that is those who manage to reduce the amount of housework they do to an absolute minimum, have a strong sense of self-preservation.

It is not that she does not get on with her mother-in-law but the baby-sitter would class her as a ‘timid mother’ which she defines thus: Aged between 20 and 29 they usually have just the one child aged between 2 and 3. The husband is a busy man and always away, so he is never home for dinner. They have very few friends in the neighbourhood and very little contact with other mothers all the time that their child is not old enough to go to playschool. They hardly ever see their mothers-in-law and no one ever phones them.
