Discepolo di Dilthey, Boas accoglie anche le indicazioni dei neokantiani di Heidelberg secondo cui le scienze umane (ivi compresa l'antropologia culturale) dovevano seguire il metodo idiografico. Trasferitosi negli Stati Uniti, Boas è diventato colui che ha portato finalmente l'antropologia culturale al grado di scienza positiva pienamente sviluppata. Secondo Boas, l'antropologia culturale deve studiare non "ogni cultura in generale", bensì i singoli gruppi umani, in modo descrittivo e comparativo, facendo attenzione ai loro tratti distintivi.
Dopo queste considerazioni veniamo alle due domande fondamentali.
