When determining the lexicographic functions of a given dictionary, lexicographers need to take cognisance of the outer texts as components that should play a role in ensuring that the required lexicographic functions can be achieved. In this regard Gouws (2004 :86) stresses the need for a transtextual functional approach. The lexicographic functions assigned to a dictionary, cf. Tarp (2000) ; Bergenholtz/Tarp (2002), should not only prevail in the central list but also in the outer texts. The lexicographic selection, presentation and treatment of cultural data are typically regarded as within the scope of the knowledge-orientated function of a dictionary or, to a lesser extent, as part of the text reception function.
