There is now a wider acceptance that a sufficient diet may not be an optimal diet, providing the context for further work uncovering the links between nutrition, cognition and the brain. Cognitive results from various studies show that early diet is related to future outcome even in a setting where overall levels of nutrition, both pre- and postnatal, are adequate and severe malnourishment is no longer seen as a prerequisite for less than optimal outcome.
