At the beginning, the wall of the cerebral hemisphere consists of three basic layers that include the inner neuroepithelial, mantle, and marginal layers. Each neuroepithelial cell has a single nucleus and double cytoplasmic extensions. The deep extension extends to the internal limiting laminae, whereas the superficial extension stretches to the external limiting membrane, which itself is covered by the pia mater. Attachment of the superficial and deep extensions is maintained via end feet that contribute also to these membranes or laminae.
Some neuroblasts traverse the initial group of migratory neuroblasts to assume a position in the middle third of the mature cortex, whereas others may pursue different courses among the previous group of neuroblasts to reach more superficial positions.
