42 Releasing Your Child’s Potential Being wrong One of the difficulties is: what is wrong? What is right and what is wrong? Who has the monopoly on being right? Being right or wrong is different for different people. What we want and what we need in life might not be the same thing. So we might think we have got something wrong but in fact it was exactly right for us at that point in life. It taught us what we needed to know if we bothered to look and recognise the lesson. This is why being fully aware is so important to all aspects of life.

It is a lack of selfacceptance, a lack of acceptance of your human fallibility, that you are going to make mistakes from time to time. Recognising cultural attitudes There are far too many examples of a social perception that any mistakes you make are merely confirmation of how inadequate you really are. In the main our society takes the attitude that mistakes must be punished rather than viewed as an opportunity for learning. The bigger the mistake, the more guilt and shame is heaped upon us, and the more we are made to feel that we are a ‘bad person’.

The story of Violet in Chapter 12 explains and demonstrates some of these points through two of the characters, Old Mags and Violet herself. In spite of her youth, Violet is a greater selfactualiser than either of her parents or most of the people in the village. Exploring the importance of emotional competence There are many ways in which emotional competence can be defined as important and it would be difficult to decide if one was more important than another. It is not always helpful to try and separate out specific areas as we are looking at achieving a life that is an overall success for our children and ourselves.
