G. g. stem cell research in certain countries including the United States under the Bush administration). Reproductive medicine and assisted fertilization are of central concern in any modern culture or human society relying on modern medicine (Ginsburg and Rapp, 1991). Consequently, morals and ethics are always already present in the clinical work, both in the very monitoring practices and regulations and in the interaction between staff and clients, and therefore the study of assisted fertilization is by no means a strictly scholarly pursuit, aiming at inscribing theories into practices, but it is also part of the reproduction of the moral economy of assisted fertilization.
Various moral beliefs, primarily related to the interests of the unborn child having just one single parent, serve to exclude these single women from the therapy in Sweden. In the emerging bioeconomy, some services are provided by the public healthcare services in many welfare states, but there are still domains that are regarded to be outside of the public healthcare system’s responsibilities—assisted fertilization for single women in Sweden being an illustrative case—thereby opening up for private alternatives.
In other words, the moral economy underlying assisted fertilization is what may be called infra-theoretical inasmuch as it is rarely surfacing in the research work while it is always already present in the analyst’s gaze, in his or her capacity for seeing elements of the empirical material. ” The self-discipline and infra-theoretical perspectives elicited in this study are difficult to explicate exactly. However, as researchers and authors of this book, the factors in our context that we have identified as important are that we are part of a society in which the practice has become accepted, shown for example by the fact that in Sweden it has become partially integrated into the public healthcare system.
