In a symmetrical distribution, the median and the mean will coincide with each other (and with the mode, if the distribution is unimodal). In a positively skewed distribution the mean will be greater than the median; in a negatively skewed distribution it will be less. If we know the mode and the median of a distribution we can tell whether, and how, it is skewed. Exercise 6. Construct a frequency distribution and a cumulative frequency distribution of the length of sentences in words in the following passage.

Moreover, a distribution may not have one single mode: there may be no single value which occurs more frequently than any other. An author, for instance, may use three- andfive-letterwords with equal frequency. In such a case the word-length distribution would be said to be bimodal, as having two modes. The frequency polygon for a bimodal distribution will resemble a mountain range dominated by two high peaks. Exercise 4 Divide the following passage into three sections of equal length in words.

Who can find a virtuous woman? Her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it; with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
