Cave 4. In August, Bedouin explorers made a momentous discovery: Cave 4 at Qumran—which contained the remnants of well over 700 scrolls. They reportedly were alerted to the cave by an older tribesman, who recalled as a young lad chasing a partridge into a cavity that turned out to be the opening of a cave near Khirbet Qumran. Several youths, he remembered, had entered it and found pottery and other objects. On September 20, 1952, de Vaux contacted Harding to say that the Bedouin had offered him a huge quantity of fragments and that he had purchased some for 1,300 Jordanian pounds ($5,200).
