12 Despite such claims, however, the linkage between progress and Protestantism was one of the recurring arguments in the case against Catholicism. For many French Protestants, in turn, the United States figured as an exemplary society which, by fully realizing the emancipatory potential of the Protestant creed, had created a powerful mix of religious zeal and political and social liberty. 13 But rather than simply relying on second-hand information, many French Protestants went to see America for themselves.

Students crowded into the halls to hear Michelet and Quinet, working in tandem, deliver a detailed and savage indictment of the principles and ambitions of the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits, Michelet and Quinet argued, embodied no other principles than permissiveness, hypocrisy and a thirst for power, and posed a deadly threat to society and government. In October 1844, even before it had been translated into English, the book-length edition of the lectures was being commended to American readers.
