Now they were prepping for an industry showcase that would result in either a recording contract, or the end of the band. The showcase would be at The Ritz in New York City, opening 2 nights for Steele Breeze.

This is when you play the same place the same day of the week, every week. This is important for building a following, if you are good, or just having steady employment and a place to practice if you aren’t so good. The typical way this is done is to talk a bar owner into giving you a shot, usually on a night the bar wouldn’t be crowded anyway, like a Sunday. Once you get your shot, normally for a piece of what comes in the door, you get everyone you know to show up. Beg and plead if you have to.

Most were flattered and they would. When you had a night off, you would just pull out the old mailing list and start making calls to hook up later. This was a great system with only one drawback. After a busy weekend you might have a few numbers to go through. There was no way to remember who was who. And also, if you made the mistake of going around with the mailing list after a few drinks, there was no quality control. Sundays were always a surprise, never knowing who was going to open that front door.
