However, this information is crucial to understanding how humans work and why they may react in certain ways to stimuli. Here, pure research has led to understanding but not created any change. Although pure research has no intention to create change, it is often the foundation for new practice and provides the basis for applied research and modern progress. For example Watson (1979) set out to define the meaning of caring in order to enhance understanding of the term. Her work has been used as a foundation for many other researchers who have tried to devise models of caring that can be used to: raise consciousness of caring (Benner and Wrubel 1989), define caring behaviours (Morrison and Burnard 1997) and teach caring through education (Ross 2000).

The steps appear to occur in an ordered linear manner; however, many researchers acknowledge that far from being organized the process can sometimes be messy and unpredictable. For example, stages often overlap and the researcher may have to shift back and forth between phases especially if problems arise with issues concerning reliability and validity.

It is a cycle of continuous improvement that has equity, accessibility and acceptability as important considerations.
