In these situations the adults need to do two things at once: 1) make sure the environment says “No” clearly and accurately and 2) teach the empowering discipline. Virtue Virtue is usually understood as being good, but this undercuts the usefulness of virtues.

We must ponder them in our hearts. If we must keep a journal about our children, these events are what should be in it. Recording at what age they learned to crawl or walk or talk or read shrinks to insignificance in the face of such character-revealing moments. I told Helen’s parents this story, and the next Monday they emailed me another Helen story: Helen was again playing in the sandbox over the weekend.
