From the mid-1990s, mission-critical information services have been protected from computer failure by Failover Management Software (FMS). This monitors continuously and directs applications to migrate or fail over to another computer when a failure is detected. Today, FMS can pool dozens of computers into clusters. Applications that run on clusters can move or redistribute themselves if a computer fails, without involving users, who are generally unaware of the specific computer with which they are interacting.
