Hybrid MPC is an MPC scheme that finds optimal control strategies for a hybrid system model. Optimization of this control results in a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem, which can be solved numerically to find the optimal control input. The resulting control force satisfies the passivity constraint and no longer needs clipping as shown in Fig. 2b. The on-line implementation of hybrid MPC must solve the optimization problem during the sampling time of the system, which is a computationally challenging problem with a complex system model and/or anything but the shortest time horizons.
