These systems are effective in exploiting human knowledge but cannot deal with unexpected situations and setting a variety of thresholds is not a trivial exercise. 2. Learning: in this case the system accumulates typically probability functions to represent what occurs frequently (assumed to be normal and not require human intervention). When an outlier is detected an alarm can be triggered (or the operator asked if such an outlier should be incorporated into the normal population). There is inherent flexibility in this approach, however, training a system can take long times.
Next, PCA was employed to reduce the dimensionality of the shape vectors from 128 to 15. Even though the resulting shape model only had 15 modes, it could explain 99% of the variance in the landmark positions in the training set. Fig. 8 depicts the effect of varying the first three modes between -3 and 3 times of the standard deviations from the mean value, when all other modes were set to zero. Mode 1 Mode 2 Mode 3 Fig. 8. Effects of varying the first three modes of the shape model between ±3 λi After the shape model was trained, it was used to interactively delineate the LV in another 50 sets of MPS tomograms.
