Assuming UJ = fk/M, we write down equation (3) in the form 2 2 [l-f /M gh]\dx 2 dzh 2h dx2 ' gh r i / i d ^ y J. h dx w- yk\ (6) The finite-difference approximation (6) now leads to an asymmetrical threediagonal matrix. Characteristics of barotropic edge waves and shelf waves were obtained for the South Crimea coastal areas and for the Kerch peninsula, as well as for the Anatolian coastal zone. The chosen sections depict specific features of the entire Black Sea coastal bottom topography (except for the shallow northwestern section of the basin).

Yankovsky 28 (Fig. l a ) ft* = 180 m; the shelf break for both profiles corresponds to the 100 m isobath (Fig. l a ) . However, in the case of profile 1, shelf width is merely 5 km, whilst in the case of profile 3, it equals 46 km. Owing to this, edge waves corresponding to profile 3 have larger space-time scales: period T is equal to 1 h 58 min to 2 h 6 min and the wavelength ranges from 300 to 395 km (Fig. 2). For profile 1, these quantities are equal to 11-15 min and 25-45 km, respectively (Table 1).

2 cm, respectively, with / ( y ) = 1. During winter time, coastal internal waves may have larger amplitudes than outside the area of along-shore flows. Distribution of (2 by the y-axis also depends on the form of / ( y ) . For e = 2 X 1 0 - 3 this is shown by the (2(y) curves in Fig. 3, where the solid curve corresponds to f(y) = cos 61 and the dashed curve to / ( y ) = 1. The influence of along-shore localized coastal flows 39 Figure 3. Dependence of the density gradient surface disturbances upon the amplitudinal distribution of atmospheric pressure with the depth being constant.
