With the ergograph Tarchanoff found that lively music, in nervously sensitive persons, will temporarily cause the disappearance of fatigue, though slow music in a minor key had the opposite effect. Féré found that discords were depressing ; most, but not all, major keys were stimulating ; and most, but not all, minor keys depressing. In states of fatigue, however, the minor keys were more stimulating than the major, an interesting result in harmony with that stimulating influence of various painful emotions in states of organic fatigue which we encounter when investigating sadism.

There is no detailed and extensive evidence at present concerning the existence of any yearly cycle of involuntary sexual activity in women. It is, however, in women, as the existence of menstruation shows, that sexual periodicity is most normal and pronounced. In this respect women are more profoundly primitive than men. The origin of menstruation has been much discussed. It used to be thought that lowly organisms living within the influence of the tides would show a lunar periodicity. This, however, is seldom found.
