What gives meaning to your life? Remember that you can have nasty values as well as good ones, although ideas about what counts as ‘nasty’ or ‘good’ should always be problematised. Some people value greed and selfservice, whereas others value generosity and caring for others. What makes some people think of Gandhi as a saint and Al Capone as a sinner? Both had strong family values; both believed in a strong social order. What was different about them? Action research is collaborative and focuses on knowledge of practice Action research is always done with others.

The process is ongoing because, as soon as we reach a provisional point where we feel things are satisfactory, that point immediately raises new questions, and it is time to begin again. Visual models may be found in Elliott (1991) and others. In 1984, I outlined my idea that action research processes can never be seen as one-dimensional, because issues may generate other issues, which may need to be dealt with before it is possible to proceed with the main issue. 3 to communicate this generative and unpredictable aspect of action research, and this model has been adapted and further developed in several places.

We are born into a context with its own norms and mores, and we learn and internalise these from birth. Bourdieu (1990) speaks about the habitus, the dispositions and mindsets we acquire through living in a specific culture. Over time, we tend to accept these as the norm; we forget that we had to learn them, and that other people may not think as we do. It is essential, therefore, to interrogate how and why we come to think as we do. It is especially important when writing to remember that our discourses are informed and influenced by our histories and experiences.
