Postmodernism challenges and displaces this abstract, transcendental subject, arguing instead that subjects cannot be separated from their subjectivity, history and socio-cultural location. In the postmodern, there are no Archimedean points, the subject is instead decentred, enmeshed in the ‘text’ of the world, constituted in intersubjectivity, discourse and language. Equally, the separation of subject and object, objectivity and subjectivity, is itself a position maintainable only so long as the knower is posited as abstract and decontextualised and the known object posited as the ‘other’ unable to reflect back on and affect the knower (Acker et al.

It is rather the ‘social’ subjective in the sense of the embodied and the embedded self that is being foregrounded. What personal reflexivity draws attention to is that the self that researches has an autobiography marked by the significations of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class, etc. In other words, that these significations are socio-cultural products that are part of the practice of writing and which have effects upon both the form and the outcomes of research. By understanding the ‘personal’ in terms of the social, the cultural and indeed the political, we can begin to make sense of the notion that all research requires and operates through a set of pre-understandings.

The hermeneutic sciences such as history and other human sciences as well as some forms of the social sciences employ practical modes of reasoning. Here neither ends nor means are pregiven and known rules of method are not followed. What is involved here is the making of right and appropriate decisions and judgements in the light of the circumstances of the situation. Empirical/analytic science or knowledge is linked with the positivist/ empiricist research tradition and with prediction and control; hermeneutic science or knowledge with the hermeneutic/interpretive research tradition and with enlightenment, understanding and communication.
